West Point known for history, scenery

Founded in 1778, it's the nations oldest continuously manned Army post. It's also the nation's oldest service academy, founded in 1802.

If the sight of West Point is not impressive enough for most visitors, then the breathtaking views of the Hudson River Valley will capture the hearts of all.

Founded in 1778 on the western banks of the Hudson River, the United States Military Academy at West Point is more than just the oldest and most preeminent military academy in the country. It's also a step back into American history.

More than 3 million visitors annually have seen pistols that belonged to George Washington and Gen. George S. Patton Jr. at the West Point Museum; regimental battle flags going back to the Civil War; and the largest working church organ in the world at the Cadet Chapel.

And then there's Trophy Point, where tourists can see, touch and sit on one of the many links from the Great Chain. The 500-yard chain stretched across the Hudson at West Point during the Revolutionary War and served as a barrier to enemy ships.

West Point is also known as the education force behind some of American's greatest leaders. George Armstrong Custer, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, President Dwight Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, George Patton and Norman Schwarzkopf are just a few of the distinguished general who once walked guard duty on campus.

Beyond the great history and scenes to take in, visitors can see an array of collegiate sports including football games at Michie Stadium, concerts and performances at Eisenhower Hall Theatre or free concerts of the academy's green playing fields featuring the USMA Band.
