Lyndhurst is one of America's finest Gothic Revival mansions.

Designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis, it is complemented by picturesque landscaped lawns and a comprehensive collection of Victorian decorative arts. Special attractions include the Rose Cottage (a children's playhouse), the rose garden and the greenhouse.

The house is built of brick faced with Ossining marble. It boasts a four-story tower, turrets, diamond-shaped windows that overlook the river, an elegant porte cochere and an expansive veranda. The interior is finished in densely crenellated, handcrafted woodwork.

Financier Jay Gould purchased Lyndhurst in 1881 and built an extraordinary greenhouse on the grounds over 375 feet long, plus wings. The skeleton of that structure still stands.

In 1900, specimens from the greenhouse established the orchid collection at the New York Botanical Garden. Lyndhurst was given by Gould heirs in 1964 to the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
